Overcome by emotion, at 6 a.m. he started looking in the Rumbo flight search website and found a Ryanair flight from Madrid to Santiago. He booked a seat for himself and his wife, Elisa. airline has provided the booking references.
They received a message from Ryanair informing them that they would
receive a confirmation email in a few minutes.
With the issue of transport resolved and with a few hours to
spare before check-in they took their two children to their grandparents’
house.
For two hours Elisa waited for the email to arrive before
finally phoning Rumbo: “There wasn’t much time before the flight left, so I
called Rumbo to find out what was going on. I told them that we were the
next-of-kin of one of the victims of the accident and we just had to get on the
plane,” she said as she held back tears at the makeshift morgue.
Rumbo told her that they would find out what the problem was and try to
resolve it as fast as they could. A few minutes later Rumbo told her what had
happened. They hadn’t received the email confirmation because Ryanair had
changed the price of the tickets - which now cost 800 euros. Between 6 a.m. and
8 a.m. the airline had almost doubled the price of the seats on the main flight
carrying the relatives of the victims to the scene of the catastrophe.
The flight agency insisted that they would have to pay the
increased price if they wished to fly: “I told them to cancel the tickets
because I wasn’t going to let anyone take advantage of our tragedy” said Elisa.
“It’s disgusting that people try to make money out of a
tragedy like this. Instead of helping us, putting on more flights and giving us
more options, they make it even more painful for us,” said Angel, annoyed at
the airline’s total lack of compassion.
“I don’t care if legally they can get away with it. It
doesn’t make it any less reprehensible. Companies should realise that their
brand image can be affected by such a response to a tragedy. I can’t believe
they made them go through that,” said a friend of Angel, clearly upset.
Angel, an only child has now lost both parents. With his
emotions in tatters, he got in his car and drove the 600 kilometres to Santiago
de Compostela to identify his mother’s body. He identified her by her handbag
and a fingerprint. “We arrived seven hours later and can you imagine what it
was like driving in that state?” said Elisa.
Angel couldn’t bring himself to see his mother’s face. He
preferred to keep the memory of the last time he saw her, when he went to the
station to see her off. As he lifted her case onto the train he turned to give
her a goodbye kiss, not realising it would be the last kiss he would ever give
her.
